Joyce Irene (Braga) Barrett, of Fairhaven

Joyce Irene (Braga) Barrett, of Fairhaven, formerly Attleboro, died peacefully in her home on Thursday, April 30, 2020. Born in Attleboro, in 1940 to Benjamin and Irene (Ringuette) Braga, she was a 1958 graduate of Attleboro High School. She went on to study nursing at the Peter Bent Brigham School of Nursing where she earned her diploma in nursing. Joyce returned to Attleboro, where she began her career as a Registered Nurse at Sturdy Memorial Hospital, and raised her family of three children.

Joyce was an avid runner, belonging to many running groups- her favorites being the Boston Athletic Association and the women from town with whom she ran daily. She competed in many local road races, delighting in the camaraderie that such events offered, running the Tufts 10K for 29 consecutive years, and the Falmouth Road Race. While she did run a marathon or two, her contribution to the Boston Marathon came in the form of volunteering for 38 years passing out numbers and delivering care in the Medical tent. She enjoyed meeting her running heroes, Johnny Kelly, Joan Benoit, and Bill Rodgers.

Joyce was a devout Catholic, and belonged to many parishes over the course of her lifetime. She made many life-long friends through the church. She volunteered on mission trips providing nursing care in Guaimaca, Honduras and Tanznia.

Joyce travelled extensively, journeying to 49 out of 50 states. She loved the island of Kauai, Hawaii most, experiencing birthdays and holidays in Princeville surrounded by her family. Joyce also loved the Cape, spending many summer days on Bayview Beach, running the roads to Scargo Tower and the Johnny Kelly Recreation Area.

Joyce loved the ocean, long distance running with her friends, bicycling, swimming. She loved sand dollars, sea shells, the sound of waves crashing on the beach. She loved the Grateful Dead, Moody Blues, and Willie Nelson. But most of all, she loved her family, her children, grandchildren and nieces and nephews.

Joyce leaves her three children- Greg and his wife Kim of E.Bridgewater, Chris and his wife Maureen of Medfield, and Joanne Mogilnicki and her husband Bob of Marion. Joyce was predeceased by her beautiful granddaughter Addison Bree Barrett. Eight surviving grandchildren include: Luke, Connor, Jack, and Kathryn Barrett of Medfield, Sam and Jacob Dorothy of Marion, and Ryan and Kaelyn Barrett of E. Bridgewater. Joyce is survived by her sister Joan Cooper of Attleboro, MA and her brothers Ken Braga of Ellington, CT and Steve Braga of Rehoboth, MA.

ARRANGEMENTS:
At a to-be-determined, socially-responsible date there will be a public Celebration of Life.
