He was married on July 20, 1957 in Greenwich, Connecticut to Martha Sharpe "Sunny" Crawford, only child and heiress of George Washington Crawford, by whom he had two children, a son and daughter. He was subsequently married twice more; on October 3, 1968 in Vienna to Hannelore Auer, whom he divorced in 1979; then again on March 23, 1979 in Nairobi, Kenya to Beatrice Kyd von Rebenburg, by whom he had a daughter.
