Orrin A. Abbey. son of Nathaniel Abner Abbey of Dutchess County, New York, and Mary Nugent of County Cavan, Ireland, was born at Port Hope, Durham County, Canada West, April 22, 1847. Orrin immigrated to the United States during 1852.

Orrin Abbey, whose birth place was Port Hope, Canada, enlisted at age 18 years, in the United States Navy at Chicago, Illinois, during November, 1863. At his enlistment his complexion was described as Dark. Orrin Abbey served as a Seaman on the gunboats, USS “Paw Paw” (1863) and USS “Clara Dolsen” (1862), on the Ohio and Tennessee Rivers for a year, when he was discharged by reason of expiration of his term of enlistment. Orrin Abbey, whose residence was Fond du Lac County, Wisconsin, enlisted and mustered in as a Private into Company E, 38th Regiment of Infantry, Wisconsin Volunteers, February 15, 1865, and was mustered out at Washington, District of Columbia, July 26, 1865.

Orrin Abbey, age 23 years and a Farm Laborer, was enumerated June 6, 1870, at Byron, Fond du Lac County, Wisconsin,in the household of his brother Wellington Abbey* 29 a Farmer, with Laura Estelle Abbey 24 and George Abbey 1.

Orrin Abbey married Adelia "Della" Corey (born about 1845 in Randolph Township, Crawford County, Pennsylvania; died of consumption in San Diego, California, November 20, 1892; Della was a daughter of Enos Corey of Meadville, Crawford County, Pennsylvania, and Electa Wilcox of New York) in Dodge County, Wisconsin, February 22, 1872. Orrin and Della had two children, Mary Abbey (born about 1877 in Wisconsin; died sometime after 1885) and Eunice Adella Davies (born in Nebraska June 21, 1879; adopted 1880 in Sutton, Clay County, Nebraska; died, at Solana Beach, San Diego County, California, May 1, 1955).

Orrin Abby, age 35 years and a Farmer, was enumerated during June, 1880, at Freedom, Republic County, Kansas, with Belle Z. Abby 35. Orrin Abby, age 40 years and a Farmer, was enumerated March 1, 1885, at Freedom, Republic County, in the Kansas State Census with Dell Abby 40, Mary Abby 8 and Eunice Abby 6. In 1888-1889 Orrin Abbey was Post Commander of John Brown Post No. 44, G. A. R., in Republic County, Kansas.

Orrin married Margaret Ann "Maggie" (Kneale) Garrett, widow of William Thomas Garrett (born in Kirk Andreas, Isle of Man, United Kingdom February 12, 1857; died in San Diego, California, February 10, 1947; she was the daughter of Thomas Kneale and Jane Cleator, both of Andreas, Isle of Man, United Kingdom) in San Diego, California January 25, 1894. Three children were born of that marriage: Mary Elizabeth Abbey (born in Kansas November 12, 1894; died at Portland, Oregon January 20, 1992; married (1) in California to Fred Strayer Bunker about 1911; divorced; married (2) in Riverside County, California, to Sheldon Arthur Stubbs, October 1, 1921), Ethel Margaret Abbey (born at Freedom Township, Republic County, Kansas, January 28, 1897; died at San Diego, California, May 18, 1945; married in California to John Douglas Jacks about 1916), and Lucille Myrtle Abbey (born at Belleville, Republic County, Kansas, March 18, 1901; died at Los Angeles County, California, December 30, 1961; married at San Diego, California, to Ralph Lee Henderson, in June, 1918.

Orrin Abby, age 54 years and a Farmer, was enumerated June 19, 1900, at Freedom, Republic County, Kansas, with Maggie A. Abby 43, Mary E. Abby 5, Ethel M. Abby 3 and Fred K. Garrett 12, his son-in-law. Orrin Abbey filed from Kansas for a Civil War veteran's pension August 7, 1890, and received application No. 877,001 and certificate No. 899, 668.

The “Belleville Telescope,” Belleville, Republic County, Kansas, reported often on the life of Orrin Abbey. On August 15, 1905, it reported that a message from Orrin Abbey in New Mexico says that he is very sick. “Mr. Abbey has a host of friends here, not only as comrades but with every one. It is their hope that the old comrade may rally and live for many years.” Then on August 25, 1905, the paper reported that Ira Corey received a dispatch on Monday that Orrin Abbey was worse and that Mrs. Corey left the next morning to be at his bedside. Orrin A. Abbey died October 4, 1905, in Artesia, Eddy County, New Mexico, at age 58 years. On October 6, 1905, it reported that Ira Corey received a telegram early Thursday morning telling of the death of Orren [sic] Abbey at Artesia, New Mexico. “Mr. Abbey is well known in Republic county, where he was a resident for a number of years. For some time he has been suffering with throat trouble and went to New Mexico only about a year ago in the hopes of benefitting his health. It is thought that this throat trouble led to a complication of diseases which caused his death. He was a highly respected, well-to-do citizen and the news of his death will come as a shock to his many friends in this vicinity. At the time of going to press it is not known whether his body will be brought here for burial or not. He was a member of the Knights and Ladies of Security at this place.”

*Wellington Abbey, whose residence was at Byron, Wisconsin, enlisted and mustered into Company A, 14th Regiment of Infantry, Wisconsin Volunteers, December 9, 1861, and was mustered out as a Corporal at Mobile, Alabama, October 8, 1865. He filed for a Civil War veteran's pension November 13, 1879, and received application No. 320,946 and certificate No. 391,646. Laura E. Abbey, his widow, filed from Wisconsin for a widow’s pension April 27, 1903, and received application No. 783,157 and certificate No. 566,469.
