Marshall Hardy Johnson, a native of Raleigh and longtime North Carolina business leader and author, died at the age of 94 on April 18, 2018.

A memorial service will be held 11:00 AM Saturday April 21, 2018 at First Baptist Church Greensboro Chapel. The family will receive friends following the service at the church atrium.

Marshall was the youngest son of William Thompson Johnson (W. T.) and Evie Barnes Johnson, both natives of Johnston County, NC. His siblings were Tom, Wilbert, Gladys, Dorothy, Leslie, James, Frances, Albert, and Joseph. None survived him. Surviving are his wife, Beverly Ray Johnson, and daughters, Lynn Titchener of Raleigh and Carter Overton and husband Ashley of Greensboro. Nieces and nephews include Gennie Thurlow of Raleigh, Albert Johnson II and wife Catherine, Douglass Johnson and wife Ella, Brian Johnson of Nashville, TN, and Sara Jo Wiggs of Goldsboro, NC. Surviving grandchildren are Dr. Lewis Overton, of Chapel Hill, NC, Marshall Overton, of Charleston, SC, Winnie Titchener-Coyle, husband Michael, of Asheville, NC and Liza Deckelbaum, husband Jeremy, of Raleigh, NC. Close cousins are Edwin Stevens, of Florida and Kevin Todd Johnson of Smithfield, NC. Also surviving are his step daughter, Toni McDonald and husband, Glae, of Tega Cay, SC and step son, Lawrence McAlister and wife Lori and step grandchildren Anne, John, and Ryan McAlister of Cincinnati, Ohio. Marshall was predeceased by his son Marshall Hardy Johnson Jr. and step grandson Ian Scott McAlister.

Marshall matriculated at UNC, Chapel Hill, NC after graduating from Hugh Morrison High School in Raleigh. At UNC-CH, he enlisted in the US Navel Reserves. He served on the ship USS Grapple, in the Pacific during WW II, after attending schools at Columbia University, New York, and the University of Wisconsin in Madison. Upon being honorably discharged from the U.S. Navy, Marshall returned to UNC Chapel Hill, NC.

Marshall’s first job was with Dun and Bradstreet in Raleigh. He next joined the investment firm of McDaniel Lewis & Co, in Greensboro and later became President and CEO there. He graduated from the IBA Wharton School in Philadelphia.

Marshall was active at the Lewis firm, financing a wide ranging and diverse number of enterprises. His activities included positions of advisory and underwriting equities and municipal bonds. He held official positions in many industries. He authored 4 books, one on religion, one on business and two on family members. He was a book collector and dedicated reader.

Corporate positions were, among many others, with Domestic Finance Group, Black Panther Charcoal Co., Southern Plastic Engineering, Nationwide Homes, Futronics, First Citizens Bank (Greensboro), and CMC Finance Group. He underwrote Carolina Casuality Insurance, Mid-South Insurance Company, Virginia Savshares, Harrelson Rubber Company, Mom N’ Pops Ham House, Top-of-the-World Farms and Equipment Corporation, Diversified Manufacturing & Marketing, Little Giant Food Store, Little Mint Stores,and British American Life Insurance, LTd. Jefferson Pilot, Blue Bell and N.C. Railroad Co., Chadburn Hosiery, Chatham Manufacturing, Food Town, Lowes, Inc., Wachovia Bank, Carolina Steel, and Carolina Tel & Tel were well identified with him.

Marshall was a sixty years member and 35 year greeter at the First Baptist Church where he was a deacon and Sunday school teacher after first joining the Tabernacle Baptist Church in Raleigh at the age of eleven. Both churches’ members guided and taught him, even as he did the same for others over the years. Prayers and Bible study were his favorite lifelong practices.

He was a member of the Mid-West (Chicago) Stock Exchange for 17 years (1960-1977); the Greensboro Country Club and a member of the former Greensboro City Club, a member of the ATO Fraternity at UNC-CH, Kiwanis Club of Greensboro, (1955-2014), life member of the Boy Scouts of America, the Capital Investment Club, Odd-Fellows and Director Emeritus of First Citizens Bank of Greensboro. He served as President of the Investment Securities Dealers of the Carolinas.

His quotation about his most meaningful learned experience in life is quoted as follows: ‘I’ve learned that the quality of life is largely determined by our own choices’.

In addition to their home in Greensboro, NC, Marshall and Beverly enjoyed their home at Wrightsville Beach and ocean cruises to various destinations.
