In 1971, Monica graduated from Hillside High School and later attended Hampton Institute in Virginia where she received her bachelor's degree in speech pathology and audiology in 1975. During that time, she was a proud member of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority. She then attended The University of North Carolina at Greensboro where she received her master's in speech pathology with an emphasis in hearing impaired in 1976.
Monica started her career with the Fayetteville City School system in 1977 where she spearheaded the creation of the deaf and hearing-impaired department. She later returned to Durham, North Carolina to live and she was employed with Granville County Schools for 30 years, until her retirement in 2016.
Monica was a dedicated member of Community Baptist Church, where she participated as the youth choir director, vacation bible school instructor and with various youth activities. She was a devoted member of the Pastor's Aid Committee and faithfully served as a Deaconess. Monica also lent her efforts to the prison ministry and a range of other missionary efforts.
She is survived by her two children, Jason Allen Bowen (Ashley) and Tracey Angelica Bowen; grandchildren, Matthew and Carter Bowen; stepson, Robert A. Bowen III and step grandson, Robert A. Bowen IV; sister Kimberly Allen Thomas (Darrell); aunt, Clara Allen; great aunt, Queen-Esther Allen Cooper; and a host of extended family and friends.
