Dean William King was born May 5, 1945 in York, Nebraska to Clyde and Ruth (Palmer) King. As the son of a pastor, Dean spent his youth living across the United States. He graduated from high school in Pueblo, Colorado on June 6, 1963. On August 18, 1967, Dean was united in marriage to Cheryl Redlinger of O'Neill. The couple made their home near Elm Creek, NE on his grandfather's homestead. He graduated from Kearney State College with a Bachelor of Arts in Education on August 8, 1969. After college, he taught school. He was also employed by Plectron, West Pharmaceuticals and for the past 20 plus years he worked for his son, Shawn, at King Investment Properties.

Dean enjoyed studying the word of God daily, singing and listening to gospel music, playing trombone and guitar, riding horses, repairing vehicles and attending his kids and grandkids extracurricular activities. He also served New Life Church as deacon, a Sunday school teacher and was part of the worship team which included his wife who played organ. Together they frequently played special duets with him playing trombone or singing. Most importantly, he was always sharing his faith with others and helping those in need.
