Robert W. Callahan, 87, Nyssa, formerly of Adrian, passed away Friday, Aug. 25, 2006, at Nyssa Gardens.

Bob was born Sept. 22, 1918, in Birdwood River, Neb. His birth name, George William, was later changed to Robert, then to Bob. He was raised on the Rosedale Ranch in Nebraska with his family. This was when he learned to be a cowboy and pretty much whatever it took to build, break or tame. He attended grammar school on the Rosedale Ranch. From there he attended and graduated from North Platte High School in 1935. From 1935 to 1942 he worked on area ranches. January 1942 he enlisted into the 115th Cavalry Regiment. From 1942 to 1944 Bob met, fell in love and married Nellie Lucille Jackson of North Platte, March 1944. From North Platte the Army took them to Utah, South Carolina, Ft. Lewis, Wash., and then to the Pacific where he served as Mess Sergeant and Cryptographic Camp crowder MO at Asiatic Pacific Theatre.

Discharged January 1946, and they lived in Provo, Utah, where baby Robert was born. Bob spent time there raising chickens, picking fruit and breaking horses. In 1948 they moved to Adrian, where baby Philip was born. 1949 to 1950 Bob and Nellie bought an 88 acre farm in the Big Bend area. In 1951 baby Nancy was born. In 1960 baby Alex was born. All the while both worked hard to rear kids and maintain the farm. Bob was adept to fix whatever needed fixed, built or grown. For years he held the position of brand inspector for Malheur County in Oregon. A mechanic that could fix or rebuild any machine he needed. And his love of horses was still evident from the first time he sat on Duke at the Rosedale Ranch to the Buckskin Duke he rode and fondly remembers riding in Nyssa.

In 1991 the farm was sold and Bob moved to Tooele, Utah, until he decided to come home to Nyssa in 1994 where he stayed with Nellie until she passed away in December 1999. Bob continued to stay in Nyssa until he passed away.

Bob is survived by his brother, Pete Callahan, Mt. Pleasant, Utah; his children, Philip Allen Callahan, Nyssa, Nancy Carol York, New Plymouth, and Alex Loren Callahan, Nyssa; eight grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.

He is preceded in death by his son, Robert Callahan.
