John Butz Helms, 102, passed away peacefully Saturday afternoon, May 2, 2020, at Dock Woods Community in Towamencin Township, PA, where he had resided since He was preceded in death by his wife of 68 years, Florence Helms in 2016.

John was born on February 26, 1918 in Philadelphia, PA. He was the son of Harry S. and Blanche (Butz) Helms. He was a graduate of Roxborough High School, where he was captain of their soccer team. He enlisted in the U.S. Army Air Force and served in Europe during World War II.

John was a printer and spent his life in this business, once owning a small newspaper, The Spring Lake Gazette. John was an active and faithful member of the Plymouth Meeting Evangelical Congregational Church for most of his life. After moving to Dock Woods, he was a member of the Central Schwenkfelder Church in Worcester, PA. John was an active volunteer and treasurer of the Patriotic Order Sons of America for over 80 years and volunteered at Lansdale/Abington Hospital for 13 years. John had a smile for everyone and we will miss his smile.

John is survived by his children Nancy Benninger and her husband, Robert, of Glassboro, NJ, Connie Renn and her husband, Henry, of Lancaster, PA, Leslie Seese and her husband, Alan, of Lansdale, PA and Scott Helms and his wife, Maria, of Philadelphia, PA; grandchildren Kendra Gottshall, Kara Burkholder, Kim Gilman, Mark Benninger, Matthew Seese, Timothy Seese and eight great-grandchildren.

Because of the current pandemic, a private burial will take place at the Garden of Memories in Worcester, PA. If possible, a public memorial service will be announced at a later time.
