Mr. Gary M. Owen, 75, of Thomaston, died Monday morning March 2, 2020 at his residence.
Memorial services for Mr. Owen will be held on Thursday, March 5, at 6:00 PM in the chapel of Fletcher-Day Funeral Home with Chaplain Tom Lee officiating. The family of Mr. Owen will receive friends on Thursday afternoon from 5:00 until 6:00 at Fletcher-Day Funeral Home.
Mr. Owen was born on October 28, 1944 in Griffin to the late Mack Owen and Mary A. Owen. He earned his Bachelor’s Degree in Geology from the University of Georgia and was employed as a geologist with Jim Walters Resources. He served his country honorably in the U.S. Army from 1967 until 1969 in Vietnam. During his service he served as a Military Policeman.
Mr. Owen was a private pilot; he even went as far as building his own aircraft in his basement. He was a member of the Experimental Aircraft Association and the Thomaston-Upson Arts Council. He was a lifelong member of the First United Methodist Church of Thomaston.
Mr. Owen leaves behind to cherish his memory, his loving wife, Mae P. Owen; daughter, Mary (Randy) Hankinson; son, Allen G. Owen, grandchildren, Gabrielle Anne-Marie Hankinson, Thomas Randell Hankinson, Jr., Elizabeth Catherine Leonard, and Charlotte Mackenzie Hankinson, all of Thomaston. He was preceded in death by his parents Mack and Mary Allen Owen.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Candler Field and Museum, 349 Jonathans Roost Road, Williamson, GA 30292, or to Thomaston Upson Arts Council, P.O. Box 211, Thomaston, GA 30286.
