CHRONOLOGY
* 1817 -- born 04 May in Wayne Co., TN, as ALFRED YOUNG LAUGHLIN.
* 1831 -- (age 14) ALFRED YOUNG "Sandy" LOTHLEN first went to Caldwell (Burleson Co), Texas, from Wayne County, TN, with members of the Robert Carter family -- when Lothlen was 14. * 1837 -- (age 20) returned to TN, where -- over a 10-year period -- he studied medicine, became a doctor, married MARY JANE CARTER (relative of Robert Carter), and had a few children. During this period, the family lived on 535 acres on Duck Creek northeast of Waynesboro, TN
* c1840 -- (age 23) Newly married and with children, Sandy Lothlen made the decision to continue use of the spelling "Lothlen"-- when he learned that his ancestors had used "Laughlin."

Note: Navarro Co., TX, records of Texas Land Grants indicates one "Alfred Y. Lothlen" was granted abstract 489 in Navarro County. This grant was filed in the Navarro County Court House and at the Texas General Land Office in Austin.-- Source: Rootsweb searches.
* 1850 -- (age 34) Due to continuing raiding by Indians at Gatesville, AYL moved his family periodically to safety in Burleson County. Apparently, the family maintained residence in both counties during this period. He was a circuit-riding frontier doctor in both areas until the Civil War.
