* 1817 -- born 04 May in Wayne Co., TN, as ALFRED YOUNG LAUGHLIN.
* 1831 -- (age 14) ALFRED YOUNG "Sandy" LOTHLEN first went to Caldwell (Burleson Co), Texas, from Wayne County, TN, with members of the Robert Carter family -- when Lothlen was 14. By this time, AY had inadvertantly changed the spelling of Laughlin to "Lothlen." (Note: Landis doc indicates the destination was "Washington Co., TX" and that Carter later fought at San Jacinto)
* 1837 -- (age 20) returned to TN, where -- over a 10-year period -- he studied medicine, became a doctor, married MARY JANE CARTER (relative of Robert Carter), and had a few children. During this period, the family lived on 535 acres on Duck Creek northeast of Waynesboro, TN
* c1840 -- (age 23) Newly married and with children, Sandy Lothlen made the decision to continue use of the spelling "Lothlen"-- when he learned that his ancestors had used "Laughlin."
* 1846 -- (age 29) returned to TX with his growing family, brought two slave families, and bought land in Burleson (later Lee) Co. near Lexington and in Coryell County near Fort Gates.
* 1846 -- (age 29) joined Dove Baptist Church, Caldwell, TX (ref: researcher Hill) Also during this period, AYL acquired a land grant for acreage in Navarro Co. (ref: Navarro land grant records). Today (1998), this house stands with a Texas historic marker on it.

Dr. Lothlen came to Texas before the war and practiced during the war in Coryell county.
