Joseph was born in the village of Arthur; Wellington County in 1877. He was a son of Mathias & Magdalena Brohmann.

When Joseph reached 23 years of age he married Anna Catherine Schmaltz (1882-1969) on January 22, 1901 in Waterloo County.
