Rachel Grace Knight Thorne, 87, of Fairmont, passed away Friday evening (Nov. 16, 2012) in her residence. She was born Aug. 9, 1926 in Fairmont, daughter of the late A.B. and Grace Knight. She was preceded in death by her husband, Charles H. Thorne, to whom she was married 37 years. Rachel attended Fairmont Senior High School. She briefly attended Smith College before transferring to the University of Maryland, where she was a cheerleader and member of the Kappa Kappa Gamma Fraternity. She was a member of Central United Methodist Church in Fairmont. She was a former member of the Holly Club, Fairmont Junior League and the Fairmont Field Club. She was a wife, mother, grandmother and briefly worked at the Marion County Assessor’s Office after raising her family. She was an avid bridge player and belonged to several bridge clubs over the years. Survivors include two daughters and their husbands, Mrs. William F. (Donna) Hartwig of Wey Mills, Md., and Mrs. James Mark (Cathy) Trach of Fairmont; four grandchildren, Brett Charles Hartwig of Oakland, Md., Katharine Lindsey Hartwig Newth and her husband Sean Newth of Hinghan, Mass., Rachel Elizabeth Trach of Murrells Inlet, S.C., and John Paul Trach of Breckenridge, Colo.; and three great-grandchildren, Lauren Grace Newth, Caroline Margaret Newth and Zoey Taylor Trach.
