Eddie was born in Greenville, Georgia and was raised by his parents, Jenny Mae and Jimmy Lee Bray. He confessed his love for Christ at an early age when he joined Cane Creek Baptist Church in Woodbury, Georgia. He was a member of the First United Methodist Church of Rantoul.
On a late summer day in August, Eddie met this young lady by the name of Margurette Brooks on the campus of Texas College in Tyler, Texas, on the first day of school at a bus stop. A genuine friendship developed and on July 24, 1971, the two were bonded together for life in holy matrimony. Who would have thought that accidental meeting would lead to 45 years of marriage.
Like many who call Rantoul home, Chanute Air Force Base became our first home. It is while stationed at Chanute that Ed found his passion for officiating with Margurette, keeping the scorers book. Ed officiated in football, basketball, softball and volleyball. He had his most success in volleyball. He had a face that one would not forget. Whether at the hospital or at a restaurant, someone would come up and ask, "Were you an official? I think you officiated my games."
In January 1976, Eddie became a member of the Rantoul Police Department where he retired as deputy chief in June 2005. He had the privilege of attending the FBI Academy in Quantico, Va. He was also honored as Officer of the Year. During his tenure as a police officer, he touched and impacted many lives from the youth to the senior citizen.
Eddie was a member of Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, Fraternal Order of Police, Community Service Board Member, Revolving Loan Committee, Lone Star Lodge No. 18, NOBLE (National Organization of Black Law Enforcement Executives) and Champaign/Urbana Officials Association.
Eddie leaves to cherish his memory a daughter, LaTonya Carter-Sanders; two grandchildren; a brother-in-law, Paul Brooks; two brothers, Johnny L. Bray and Eddie Bray; two sisters, Shirley (Hiram) Hayes and Vanessa Cutwright and six nieces and nephews.
