Diplomat for the Republic of Texas. He was the father of Confederate Generals Barnard E. Bee Jr. and Hamilton P. Bee. He was named after Revolutionary War Colonel Barnard Elliott.

According to contributor, Danny Grizzle, he is the namesake of Bee County, Texas, and the county seat Beeville.
