Hon. Richard S. Spofford, a well known lawyer and business man, died at his summer home on Deer Island in the Merrimack River, Newburyport, Aug. 11, aged 55. He was the son of a celebrated physician of the same name, who was an Andover schoolboy eighty years ago.
He studied law with Caleb Cushing and under President Pierce's administration was sent by the government on a mission to Mexico. He was a steadfast democrat, but warmly opposed to the policy of the present administration relating to the Fisheries. His wife was Harriet Prescott, the authoress.
