Barbara Reed Delafield died on May 1, 2020 from complications caused by the Covid-19 coronavirus.

Born Barbara deSaussure Reed in Englewood, NJ on May 31, 1936 to Elizabeth Bayly deSaussure and William Barton Reed, she moved to Washington DC with her mother and stepfather, Edmund Brooke in 1941.

Barby graduated from Holton Arms School in 1954 and joined the Class of 1958 at Wheaton College in Norton, MA. She married and had a son, Maturin Livingston "Livy" Delafield Jr. They moved to Hopewell Township where they built a house accessible for Livy, who lived with Osteogenesis Imperfecta. Livy, who was a graduate of Princeton Day School and Hofstra University, predeceased Barby in 1999.

Barby was president of the Stony Brook Garden Club and a Garden Club of America Judge. She was invited to judge shows in Boston, Philadelphia, New York and Dallas. She loved exhibiting in museums, where she enjoyed being assigned a work of art to interpret. The Princeton University Art Museum, the Montclair Art Museum, the Art Museum of Dallas and especially the University of Pennsylvania Museum of Archaeology and Anthropology were among her favorite challenges.

Together with lifetime friend Angie Austin, she served on the Competitive Classes Committee at the Philadelphia Flower Show and was responsible for helping exhibitors present their entries for judging, and ensuring that all of the entries remained in good condition each day of the show.

In 1982 Barby helped start the Princeton Flower Shop. In 2000 she started her own business, “Occasions”, providing and arranging flowers for weddings and other special occasions. She served on the Board of the Historical Society of Princeton for several years and helped organize the Fall house tours. She was a streamwatcher for the Stony Brook Millstone Watershed for 20 years.

Barby was a lifelong dog lover. Her dogs earned Obedience and Therapy certificates which allowed her to take her English Cocker Spaniels, “Maggie” and then “Minute”, to hospitals and nursing homes to cheer up the residents. She loved to travel, whether by horse on an African safari or rafting the Grand Canyon. She enjoyed fishing the lakes of the Adirondacks and Minnesota and sailing the Caribbean.
