Alvin was the son of Alvin Barton and Sue Boyd of Knoxville. Alvin entered the 6th U.S. Volunteer Infantry in July 1898 and was assigned to company C under Captain Ben Hooper. Alvin showed outstanding leadership skills and earned the rank of First Sergeant. In October 1898, he was promoted to 2nd Lieutenant of that company and after the regiment was mustered out of service in March 1899, he rejoined the army and was sent to the Phillipines. He died on his way home from the Phillipines.
