John, who worked as a gas works foreman, was the son of Thomas Austin Jr. and Sarah Castle Fawcett. He married Ann (or Anne) in Richmond on 26 September 1848. They had at least eight children: Adelaide, Janette, Alonzo, George Edward, Alice Virginia, Charles B., Mary Ella and John.

During the Civil War, he served as a Private in Company "A", 1st Infantry Regiment, Virginia Reserves.

He died age 45 of "Locomotor Ataxia," per Cemetery records. His three surviving children were adopted out after Ann's death in 1872. His grave in the plot he owned, near several of his siblings, his wife, and several of his children, is unmarked.
