Henry was the son of James D. Strout Sr. and Edith Lucy Barnes . He married Eleanor Barlow. He became a pediatric physician and over the years was instramental in making advancements in the medical world. He served in WWII as a Medical Corps Officer and was decorated for his meritorious service. He received the Bronze Star Medal for traveling with the Members of the 384th Bomber Group, one of the veteran B-17 Flying Fortress Units of the Eighth Air Force on the European aerial front. He did this to more fully understand the medical problems developed by airmen in combat.

In later years a scholarship was put in place in his name for future students going into the medical field. That scholarship still exists after his death.
