Maurice Edwin Johnson (Morrie) was born May 8, 1943 in Duluth, Minnesota to Roger Edwin Johnson and Ruth Helen Morgan. He grew up in Duluth and Forest Lake, enlisting in the Army after graduating from high school. He served as a helicopter mechanic in Germany during the Vietnam War. When his service ended, he attended Northrop Institute of Technology in Inglewood, California where he met his future wife, Julia Ann Sunde (Julie). Morrie and Julie were married May 17, 1969 in River Falls, Wisconsin and have two children, Catherine and Christopher.
Morrie loved the outdoors and was an avid hunter and dog lover. From deer hunting by Bear Lake north of Duluth to pheasant hunting in South Dakota to elk hunting in New Mexico, he was happiest when he was outside with his dogs and his family. He loved opportunities to pass on his love of hunting and his love of the outdoors and shared both with his children and grandchildren. He was especially proud of the bond he had with his granddaughter Faith and their connection through hunting and the outdoors. He could fix anything you put in front of him and and was always tinkering. If he couldn't be in the woods, he wanted to be in the garage fixing, tinkering, or building. He believed in doing things once - the right way. He was self-reliant, valued family, and was always the first to lend a hand to neighbors, family, and friends in need - all values he instilled in his children, who are incredibly proud to have called him dad. He died on April 26, 2020 due to complications from Parkinson's disease. He is now standing tall and walking freely through whatever new woods he has found, dogs and family by his side.
Morrie was preceded in death by his parents, Roger and Ruth, nephew Brett Nelson, and cousin Ronald Johnson.
He is survived by his wife Julie, children Cathie (Addi) and Chris (Tina), grandchildren Faith, Brody, Gavin Maurice, and Mateo, brothers Paul (Julie), David (Marie), and Mark (Dannette), sister Carol (Doug Nelson), and many beloved cousins, nieces, and nephews.
Private visitation was held for immediate family at Gill Brothers in Bloomington on April 28.
Funeral service will be held at a later date with burial at Fort Snelling.
