Spc. Steven Jewell of New Bern, North Carolina grew up in Dover in the western part of Craven County and was a volunteer firefighter with the Dover fire department for two years. He attended West Craven High School but dropped out in the 10th grade to take care of his son who is now 8. He later got his high school diploma at Craven Community College in May 2004 and joined the military Aug. 14, 2005 and was planning to make the Army a career. Steven enjoyed hunting, fishing and spending time with his family. He was a member of the Reelsboro United Methodist Church and the Dover Volunteer Fire Department. He died in Al Taqqadum, Iraq, of injuries suffered when his helicopter crashed at age 26.
