Sid Baker
September 26, 1943 ~ April 30, 2020 (age 76)
Sidney Otto Baker, 76, Of Alanson, MI passed away April 3o,2020, at home surrounded by his wife and children. Sid was born on September 26, 1943 in Petoskey, MI, the son of Howard and Wanda (Swadling) Baker. He spent most of his childhood years growing up in Harbor Springs, MI.
On May 19, 1962, Sid married the love of his life, forever best friend, and dance partner Beverly Koper. Sid loved being on a farm and enjoyed working at Birchwood Farms in Harbor Springs as a young man with the cattle and horses. He quickly advanced to head of maintenance for the Lodge. Following, he and his family moved to Flint, where he worked at the Chevrolet plant. They eventually returned to Northern Michigan where he tried his hand in masonry. This is where he found his true passion. He worked Union and soon founded Sid Baker Masonry with his wife and partner, Beverly. His legacy of being a talented mason will remain in this area for many lifetimes to come. He took pride in the skilled work of his gifted employees and ensured quality work for his valued customers. Sid and Beverly retired in 2018 after a long, successful career.
Sid’s humility and silent generosity will be remembered by those he helped when it was most needed.
Sid enjoyed traveling, deep sea fishing, Nascar, his two sets of Belgian horses (especially in the Fourth of July parades), Pickin’ and Grinnin’, and most importantly the quality time spent with his growing family and numerous friends.
He is survived by his wife, Beverly Baker; his daughter Wanda (John) VanValkenburgh; son Ronald (Cheryl) Baker; daughter Rebecca (Kenneth Brabender) Baker; five grandchildren Jennifer (Tim) Hahnenberg, Sidney (Rachel) VanValkenburgh, Alexis (Monson) Welch, Kaitlyn (Zachary) Redman, Samantha Baker; six great-grandchildren; 4 siblings; Howardean Hatfield, Margaret (Darcy) Geary, Mary (Phil) Koerber, and Ross (Tudy) Baker and by many beloved nieces, nephews, and cherished friends. Sid was proceeded in death by his grandson, parents, and six siblings.
Sid’s life was so full it is impossible to share everything here. Please be sure and share memories of Sid with those around you.
There will be a visitation at Stone Funeral Home on Monday, May 4, 2020, from 2:00 – 6:00 p.m. Out of respect for his family, we ask that you please wear a face mask or covering during your visit and due to state guidelines, a limited amount of visitors will be permitted inside the building at one time.
Sid will be buried next to his parents at Alanson Littlefield Township Cemetery.
