PORTLAND — Mark William Smedley, beloved husband, father, grandfather and brother, known for his thoughtful prose, soulful baritone voice and decadent Beef Wellington, died unexpectedly on Thursday, Jan. 22, 2015, at Holzer Meigs Emergency Department in Pomeroy. He was 59.

Mark spent his days in the house of his dreams, a log cabin in the woods of Meigs County, a place the family affectionately calls the Smedley Compound. There he lived with his loving wife of 33 years, Judith Francis Smedley, and his dog Molly, who never left his side.

Mark was an entrepreneur, an avid reader, a philosopher and a life-long learner, of phenomenology in particular. In 2013, he finally graduated summa sum laude with a degree in psychology. He was pursuing his graduate degree in child psychology at the time of his death.

Originally from West Portsmouth, Ohio, Mark was the “Malcom in the middle” of three boys. He was born on May 10, 1955, to Donald William and Stella Lowe Smedley.

As a young adult, he attended Ohio University, studying photojournalism and philosophy. He later traveled the country, working as a journalist and later as a community organizer for Volunteers in Service to America (VISTA), an arm of Catholic Charities, until the day he and his wife started their own research firm.

He loved history, cigars and his grandchildren, not necessarily in that order. Talking politics was one of his favorite pastimes. Many, in the Athens area, may remember his public access show, “Chew The Fat.”

Mark was a positive driving force for everyone he met. He challenged his loved ones and supported their efforts. To his wife, he was as close to saint-like as a non-Catholic could be. To his children, a super hero. May he rest in peace.

Mark is survived by his wife Judith; five children, Tania Maria (Robert) Rosario of Seattle, Wash.; Augustine (Konul) Rosario III of Victoria B.C., Judy (David) Farmer of Jacksonville, Ohio; William Smedley of Ramallah, Palestine; and Arian Celeste (Sid) Smedley of Athens, Ohio; brother, Kevin (Anne) Smedley of Portsmouth, Ohio; seven grandchildren; and a sister-in-law, Jeanne Smedley of Portland, Tenn.

He was preceded in death by his parents and a brother, Steve Smedley, of Portland, Tenn.

A service will be held on Friday, Jan. 30, at St. Paul Catholic Church in Athens, 10 a.m., followed by a gathering at his home in Portland, Ohio. All are welcome to attend and celebrate Mark’s life. Condolences can be sent to www.cremeensking.com
