Susan K. Gardner died on February 10, 2017 in the home she loved in South Hamilton, MA. She was born in St. Louis on May 11, 1923, the daughter of Walter Henry Kobusch and Violet (Bullock) Kobusch. She was educated at the Mary Institute in St. Louis, the Masters School in Dobbs Ferry NY, and Vassar College. On February 26, 1944, she married Ensign John Lowell Gardner (U.S.N.R.) at the Lesley Lindsey Chapel, Emmanuel Church, Boston. During the war, while her husband served in the Pacific, Susan worked as a nurse's aide at Barnes Hospital, St. Louis, Missouri. After the war, the Gardners lived on the property in Brookline known as "Green Hill" and moved to the North Shore in 1956 where they lived in Prides Crossing, Beverly Farms, and since 1966, in South Hamilton. Susan served both her local community as well as the larger community. She served on the Town of Hamilton Conservation Commission, volunteered at VNA, served on the boards of the Massachusetts Horticultural Society and the MSPCC. She also owned and operated an antiques/decorative arts store in Beverly Farms with a friend in the 1970s. Susan was an avid gardener and horticulturalist.

She leaves her husband of 72 years, two children, Rebecca of Manchester-by-the-Sea, and John L. Gardner of Bradford, VT, two grandchildren, Susannah A.C. Ames of Brookline, Samuel P.G. Ames of Washington, D.C., and a son-in-law, Samuel R. Campbell.
