NICHOLAS STONER AND THE SAMMONS BOYS or A TALE OF THE MOHAWK VALLEY tells the story of the remarkable Sammons family. The Sammons were early settlers in the Mohawk Valley moving to the present Sammonsville from Ulster County in the early 1700's. The family played an important role in the Revolutionary War. Their love of peace and freedom is an inspiration for Americans today. Sampson Sammons was the fattier of the Sammons boys. He provided his sons with early experiences in the Adirondack wilderness and on his Mohawk Valley farm. He instilled the love of freedom in their hearts and minds. Sampson was chairman of the 1774 Committee of Safety, a group organized to keep the Continental Congress apprised of the unrest in the Valley. Sampson was the first to be shot at in the Mohawk Valley. He was captured and escaped from Sir John Johnson. Sampson fought with the militia at Klock's Field. And Sampson was the father of three outstanding sons. Jacob, the oldest son, suffered the first blow of the Revolution in an altercation with Sir John Johnson. He joined the militia at the Battle of Oriskany. He was captured, taken to Canada, escaped, and returned home after a wilderness survivial ordeal. Frederick joined the opposition to the British along with the rest of the family. He was captured on two occasions and suffered beyond description at the hands of his captors. He joined the American forces at the Turning Point of the Revolution, the Battle of Saratoga. Thomas was a clever son. Early in the War he was able to trick Sir John Johnson into releasing him. He suffered in the War and lost the use of one arm. After the War he served two terms in the United States House of Representatives. He was respected by his fellow Congressmen and was called upon the speak whenever a question of loyalty to America arose. His most famous speech was named "The Spirit of 76" and called upon the people "to unite behind the government of our choice." And the Sammons family continued to be a remarkable family. The grandsons and great grandsons of Sampson Sammons served their communities and country with honor and glory carrying on the freedom loving tradition of the remarkable Sammons family.
