Patrick's obituary in the Canby Herald was incorrect in his career path. After completing his education at Portland State, he began his career in late 1982 as director of the Aurora Colony Historical Society. (He had also interned there during college.) At the time the museum was called the Ox Barn Museum but during Patrick's first tenure there, the museum was renamed the Old Aurora Colony Museum. He was in Aurora until 1996. He was then the executive director at the Museum of the Oregon Territory in Oregon City from 1997 until 2006, when he returned to Aurora Colony Historical Society/Old Aurora Colony Museum as curator, and in 2017 he added executive director duties to that. He worked in Aurora a total of 27 years, and MOOT for 9 years.
