Tulsa police arrested a transient man on a complaint of felony murder and larceny after a confrontation at a convenience store resulted in a man being dragged or run over by a vehicle.
Tulsa police arrested Derrick Markarius Hughey, 25, on a complaint of felony second-degree murder and larceny from a person, Tulsa Police Sgt. Brandon Watkins said.
Stephen Cook, 54, was found unresponsive Nov. 28 in the parking lot of Ryan’s Convenience Store, 4711 S. Braden Ave. Cook was lying face down on a sidewalk.
Cook was in the parking lot trying to sell a found purse for an acquaintance, according to a probable cause affidavit. Cook reportedly approached Hughey when he arrived in a 2019 Kia Sorento. About five minutes later, the Sorento backed out of a parking space at a high rate of speed.
Surveillance video from the area reportedly showed Cook approach with the handbag before being dragged by the SUV when it left the area, police said. A satchel that was attached to Cook’s body and taken by the SUV’s occupants appeared to have contributed to him being dragged.
Homicide detectives located surveillance video that shows “Derrick Hughey going through what appears to be a purse in the front seat” at the parking lot of Old South Apartments, 5115 E. 47th Place, according to the affidavit.
Cook, still at the convenience store, reportedly stood up after the SUV left and walked to a sidewalk, where he collapsed. Emergency responders transported him to a local hospital, where he was pronounced dead.
Hughey was held in Tulsa County jail in lieu of a $504,000 bond.
