BOCA RATON, Fla. - Our beloved Margaret B. Hoy died Feb. 11, 2011, in Boca Raton. Mrs. Hoy was born on July 13, 1915, in Fall River, Mass., the only child of D. Julian Burgess and Florence Etta (Harrison) Burgess. She graduated from Connecticut College for Women (now Connecticut College) in 1936. Following college, she taught French at Friends Academy in New Bedford, Mass. She returned to teaching elementary school part time in Swansea, Mass., once her children were in their teens. In 1977, she moved from Swansea to Boca Raton.
Mrs. Hoy was married for 67 years to Franklin D. Hoy, who predeceased her in 2007. Mr. and Mrs. Hoy were supporters of education. They established a scholarship for deserving students at BMC Durfee High School in Fall River, and were benefactors of their son's alma maters, Duke University and Elon University in North Carolina.
Mrs. Hoy is survived by her sons, Frederick (Pat Heuer) Hoy of Burlington, N.C., and John (Alesia) Hoy of West Palm Beach, Fla.; four grandchildren, Nikki (Todd) Smith of Burlington, N.C., Ashley (Joshua) Melendez of Lorton, Va.; and Alex and Logan Hoy of West Palm Beach; and two great-grandchildren, Zachary Carper and Kathryn Melendez.
Mrs. Hoy will be interred at Oak Grove Cemetery in Fall River.Her family and friends will miss her kindness, generosity and impeccable manners.
In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made in her memory to Florida United Methodist Children's Home, 51 Childrens Way, Enterprise, FL 32725. Arrangements are entrusted to Babione Funeral Home, East Chapel.
