Paul Arthur Shields, 82, of Palestine, IL, died April 26, 2020 at Cotillion Ridge in Robinson, IL.

He was born on September 25, 1937, in Hutsonville, IL, the son of Arthur & Pearl (Wiseman) Shields, both of whom preceded him in death. He was also preceded in death by his son, Daniel Paul in 1961; brothers-in-law, David Koch (Valparaiso, IN), Hap McIntyre (Chesterton, IN); sisters-in-law Jackie Holdren (Missouri), Andrea Lee (Valparaiso, IN), Carole Pangburn (Valparaiso, IN) and Janice Coslet (Knox, IN).

He married Janet Koch on October 26, 1957, and she survives. He is also survived by his children, Cindi Parker (Palestine, IL), Bonnie & Jerry Sanders (Oblong, IL), Scott Shields (Westville, IL) and Paul D. and Dottie Shields (Robinson, IL); by his grandchildren, Alyssa Parker & Ron Robinette (Lexington, KY), Summer & Nick Inboden (Oblong, IL), Reyna Shields and Noah Shields (both of Dallas, TX); by his great-grandchildren, Rowan, Layla (and soon to be) Hutson Inboden (Oblong, IL); by his sister, Rosemary Brock (Palestine, IL); as well as several nieces and nephews.

Paul was a 1955 graduate of Robinson High School. He went on to work for Ettelbrick Shoe Factory (Robinson), Gary Steelworks (Gary, IN), Indiana General (Valparaiso, IN) Victor Dana (Robinson), General Foreman for Sheehan (at Marathon, Robinson, IL), and was also the owner/operator of Blue Thumb Woodworks (Palestine, IL).

Paul was very musical all his life, singing and playing bass guitar, bass fiddle, mandolin, banjo & tenor guitar. Through the years he played and sang with "The Rhythm Masters", "The Driftwoods"and "Country Production." He was, by any account, a great entertainer with a fantastic voice.

He was also a wonderful poet! Every Christmas after the gifts had been opened and the festivities were calming down, Paul would sit quietly in his recliner, writing his annual Christmas poem. When it was finished, he would read them his humorous and heartwarming verses, referencing his children in each line.

He loved the outdoors, and spent countless hours bass fishing, motorcyle riding, and raising gardens with his wife. For many years, he and his family were members of the Crawford County Black Powder Club. Lots of great memories and friends were made there. He was also well known for his "shooting pool" abilities with many an opponent walking away shaking their heads. His other love was buying and trading cars, and loved to drive around the countryside.

Many family vacations were taken to Shawnee National Forest and the Great Smokey Mountains. Camping was a regular thing for the family to do for many, many years. These trips often found them sitting around the campfire watching Paul "pickin & grinin", telling hilarious stories that often had listeners rolling with laughter. (He was well known to embellish the story of a joke a time or two).

In short, Paul was one-of-a-kind. He lived with humor and heart, as well as a sense of "life is what you make it." We're thankful that he made it a good one.

A private family graveside will be held at the Robinson New Cemetery.

The Goodwine Funeral Home in Palestine is in charge of arrangements.

Memorial contributions may be made to "Janet Shields" to assist with the cost of a monument.
