His mother died about 1794 when he was only two or three years of age. His father remarried about 1795 and had eight more children. His father known as a well to do "Pasquotank Planter" died in 1813. He willed near all of his real estate of hundreds of acres to Harvey, while leaving to his second wife the home plantation and only token bequests to their eight children. If there were no unhappy feelings between Harvey and his step-mother before, the will no doubt brought some about.
By mid 1820 many Pasquotank Co. families left the Elizabeth City area for newer lands and the Harvey Scott family was included. The exact route they took north is not known but at some point they began traveling the old National Road by foot, horse and wagon. Record is found of Harvey's purchase of land in Wayne Co, Indiana in 1827. It is known their last child was born in Wayne Co. and possibly another one or two. Then in 1831 he acquired land in Hancock Co. near the Hancock and Madison County line. Not certain when they actually settled in Madison Co.
Note name on stone is spelled Harvy.
