Lord Edward Christian David Gascoyne-Cecil, more commonly known as Lord David Cecil, was the youngest of the four children of James Gascoyne-Cecil, 4th Marquess of Salisbury, and his wife, the former Lady Cicely Gore, daughter of Arthur Gore, 5th Earl of Arran. He was a well-respected biographer, historian, and scholar, as well as a member of the informal Oxford writers' group the Inklings.
