Nancy Jo (Handley) Church
Nancy loved and is loved by many. She will always be a part of us. She fought cancer courageously before passing away peacefully on July 22, 2006. We miss her greatly, yet we know she's in a much better place. Nancy, 69, was very proud of her family. She was a devoted wife of 50 years, mother, grandmother, sister and friend. Nancy is survived by her husband and love of her life, Gerald W. Church, and their children Mary Jo Mayes (Bill), Anne, Mark (Kelley), Terry (Jennifer), and Tim (Debbie). She was a very special grandmother to Katherine, Jason, Erin, Ben, Ryan, Rob, Alexis, Sean, Tim, Nikki, Emily and William, and great grandmother to Alexandra. She is also survived by her sisters, Patsy "Ann" Thomas (John) and Bonnie Ingle and her brother Leo Handley (Kathleen). She was preceded in death by her brother Reinhold "Bud" Lehne and sister Ferne Kather. Nancy was born in Anacortes but spent most of her life in Tacoma. She graduated from St. Leos High School and was a grocery checker for many years. It was hard work, but she loved meeting and talking to people every day. She was passionate about gardening and could grow anything she touched, turning even the smallest patch of earth into a thing of beauty. She was a member and former president of her garden club. She dearly enjoyed camping with her family, liked wearing hats, and was one of the Red Hat Ladies. Nancy loved her church and was very involved. She was part of Visitation Parish for more than 45 years. She had a beautiful voice and often sang in the choir. She celebrated many special family events there including baptisms, weddings and anniversaries. A celebration of Nancy's life will be held at Visitation Catholic Church, 3314 South 58th St, Tacoma, Saturday, July 29. A Rosary will be held at 9:30 a.m. followed by a funeral mass at 10. For additional information contact Piper-Morley-Mellinger Funeral Home (253-472-3353). In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to a tuition scholarship in Nancy's name at Visitation Church. We love you Mom!
