Professional Soccer Figure. William “Bill” Shankly received notoriety as a Great Britain football (soccer) player and manager. As a player in 1932, he wore the shirts of Preston North End for one year then Carlisle United, representing Scotland 7 times. He was manager of Carlisle United in 1948, Grimsby Town, Workington, Huddersfield Town and then Liverpool. It was his spell at Liverpool from 1959 to 1974 that saw his greatest achievements. The Liverpool side he inherited was an average Second Division, transforming them into the best in Europe. He laid the foundations of a club which would become the most successful side in Britain. His spell as manager saw 3 League Championships (1963-64, 1965-66 and 1972-73), 2 F.A. Cups (1965 and 1974), 1 UEFA Cup (1973), 3 Charity Shields (1964 (shared), 1965 (shared), and 1966), and 1 Second Division Championship (1961-62). He also signed some of the greatest names in the game, including Ian St John, Kevin Keegan, Ron Yeats, Tommy Smith and Emlyn Hughes. He unexpectedly resigned as manager following Liverpool's 3-0 win over Newcastle United in the 1974 F.A. Cup Final. Born in a Scottish mining community, all five of the Shankly brothers played professional soccer. During World War II, he served in the Royal Air Force. In November of 1974 at Buckingham Palace, he was awarded the Order of British Empire. Since he was considered one of the best mangers in the sport, he was inducted into the Scottish Football Hall of Fame in 2004 and a life-sized statue of him can be found at Anfield in Liverpool. After dying from a series of heart attacks while in the hospital, his remains were cremated.
