A life-long Marine, Ed valiantly served his country as a member of the United States Marine Corps for 21 years. A treasured member of the Chosin Few, Ed fought in Korea in November – December 1950 where he drove the last truck off the Reservoir. He again fought for his country in 1967-68 in the Vietnam War. Upon retiring Ed continued his service to the Marine Corps. He served as the Vice President of the Men of the Chosin Few Association, Director of the Mid-Atlantic Chapter of the Chosin Few, and was an active member of the First Marine Division, the VFW and American Legion.
Ed is survived by his best friend and wife of 57 years, Peggy J. Burgess. He also lives on in his daughter, Michelle L. Burgess-Morris (TJ Morris) of Salisbury, Maryland and the true loves of his life his grandchildren Haylee E. Morris of Knoxville, Tennessee, Isabella M. Morris and Grayson “Charlie” Edward Morris; a son Steve Burgess (Ann F. Burgess) of Hanover, Virginia; and a daughter Sherry J. Schnabel (Lt. Col. Raymond K. Schnabel, Ret. U.S.A.F.) of Chantilly, Virginia. He also leaves behind 4 additional grandchildren, Colonel Michael K. Schnabel, Ret. U.S.A.F. (Rebecca F. Schnabel) of Herndon, Virginia; Krista M. Schnabel of Chantilly, Virginia; Edward V. Burgess (Mariamme Burgess) of Pfafftown, North Carolina; Francesca Packard (Marshall Packard) of Leesburg, Virginia; three great-grandchildren, Madeline Schnabel, Jack Schnabel and Max Schnabel of Herndon, Virginia; and one sister, Linda McNeil, of Tappahannock, Virginia; as well as numerous beloved nieces and nephews.
We will forever remember Ed for the honorable man that he was. He was an avid, devoted fan of the Washington Redskins and spent many relaxing days on the golf course. Ed was a dedicated family man who possessed an incredible work ethic, was always honest and empathetic. His passion for and dedication to the United States Marine Corps will be carried on through his family. We will forever be grateful for the love that he showed to each of us and more importantly to his children and grandchildren. Ed taught us all that love does conquer all, given his 57 year devotion to his wife, Peggy. Ed’s family was his life and nothing lit up his face more than seeing his three special angels, Haylee, Isabella and Grayson, walk through the door. He was grateful they always put him first, gave him their time and all their love. He will live on in each of them.
Please join us celebrating his remarkable life on Friday, October 18th at Holloway Funeral Home in Salisbury, Maryland. Family and friends are invited to visit with the family at 5:00 pm.
