Ruth Elizabeth (Byers) Hendrix passed away after a short illness on November 7, 2017, four weeks after her 97th birthday. She was preceded in death by her husband of 62 years, A.B.(“Ab”) Hendrix, her parents, James Mitchell and Odessa (Hopkins) Byers, and her two brothers, Elvin and Harry.
Ruth was born in Hendersonville on October 10, 1920 and lived a full and wonderful life, always within the city of her birth. She was in the Hendersonville High class of 1937 which was the first class to begin and end its entire educational experience at the “new” facility. Her first-grade class is featured in the book, Hendersonville (located in the Visitor Center). Some of her classmates included Dr. Bill Lampley, Kalman Sherman, Eula Whitlock Drake, and Sammy Williams. She remembered fondly the times she had when she attended school. Ruth was most proud of her perfect attendance from sixth grade through graduation. Ruth was only sixteen when she graduated and liked to tell the story of applying at Chipman LaCrosse the day she graduated and being hired to start work the next day. She was working there when she married Ab but later quit when she became pregnant with her first child as pregnant women were not allowed to work in those years. Over the years, when she was not at home with her daughters, Ruth worked at Winn Dixie on lower Main Street but was best known for her time at J.C. Penney’s on Main Street. Many years after her retirement people would still recognize Ruth from her time at the store and would comment on what a good sales woman she had been. Ruth knew how to hustle and was proud that she always got a commission from her sales’ totals. Ruth also supplemented her day job over the years by selling Fuller Brushes, Avon, and Tupperware.
Ruth was a talented arts and crafts person, sewing almost all her daughters’ clothes when they were young and even making prom gowns when they got older. There did not seem to be a craft Ruth could not master. Besides sewing, Ruth could knit and crochet;do crewel embroidery, needlepoint, and cross stitch; do applique, smocking, and quilting; complete macramé and decoupage projects; and even make Christmas tree ornaments. She made beautiful crocheted rugs (which her children and grandchildren will cherish).The last craft Ruth mastered was basket making, at which she became so proficient she taught others this craft and was asked to demonstrate her skill at an annual Johnson Farm event.
Ruth loved a good conversation and often said there was not a person with whom she could not engage in a conversation. Those who came in contact with her at MRLEC and Pardee Rehab knew this to be true.
Ruth is survived by her daughters and their spouses, Sandra Williams (Joseph) and Trish Lustila (Gordon); her grandchildren and spouses, Sarah Miller, Lynne Williams, Jennifer Brathwaite (Terrence), Kirstin Lustila (Chris Neidhart), Dane Lustila, and Kirk Lustila; her great-grandchildren, Michael Miller and Kristian Brathwaite, and a great-granddaughter due in January (Neidhart).
The family would especially like to thank the wonderful care and companionship given to Ruth by “her lady,” Cindy Goheen, andher dear friends Vicki Loweth, Louise Orr, and John Rocks. These last persons looked after Ruth with such kindness and devotion and helped enrich and extend her life. Also, thank you to the members of the Bethany Bible Church who would stop by the house to visit. Also, thanks to all the lovely people at MRLEC whom she loved to see every Thursday.
