He was born on 21 Aug 1935 to Arvil and Gladys Cox in Coal City, WV, and grew up in Beckley with his parents and 3 siblings. He graduated from Woodrow Wilson High School in 1953, and jokingly referred to his nickname, “The Educated Toe” for his football kicking abilities. He married his wife of 61 years, Lena, in 1958.
After a brief stint as a police officer with the Beckley Police Department, he went on to a life in sales, working for a long period of time managing Gentry Men’s Shop, and eventually retiring from the John W. Eye company. He was a member of the Beckley Presbyterian Church, and the Fraternal Order of Police. He and Lena were proud to be part of the group that formed the Carpenter’s Corner, a feeding ministry in Beckley.
He is survived by his wife, Lena; his son Kevin (Elaine), of Ridgefield, CT; his daughter Kathryn Warf (Steve), of Bluefield, WV, and three grandchildren, Patrick Warf, of Huntington, WV; and Debra and Sarah Cox, both of Ridgefield, CT. He is also survived by his brother Paul Cox (Alice) of Medina, OH.
He was predeceased by his parents, Arvil and Gladys Cox, his sister, Glenna Carter, and his brother, A.E. (Eddie) Cox, Jr.
Les loved his family dearly. He was at his happiest when surrounded by his children and grandchildren. In his earlier years, he loved hunting and fishing - and his love of nature, the outdoors, reading western paperbacks, country music and watching Mountaineer football with his son-in-law, Steve Warf, gave him great pleasure. He had a smile that would warm the entire room, and an ability to turn on the charm that we will never forget.
A service celebrating his life will be held at a later date.
