KNOCKED TO GROUND

Mrs. M. E. Foulke, 70-year-old West Rialto woman, was killed yesterday morning while on the way to church. on the Foothill boulevard, about one mile west of Rialto. According to bystanders the accident was unavoidable on the part of John W. Campbell of Los Angeles, the man driving the car that struck Mrs. Foulke.
A number of witnesses assert that the woman started across the road to get into a passing machine and then dodged back in front of the Campbell machine.
Campbell, accompanied by his wife, and another man. It is said, were coming east on the boulevard. They were following two other machines. Mrs. Foulke, it was declared, was walking on the north side of the highway, going toward Rialto. A truck was coming east on the boulevard.

Machine Stops to Give Her "Lift"

The first machine in the trio stopped, Just as the truck was passing, to give Mrs. Foulke a "lift," according to tho witnesses, the truck going on past. The second machine was forced to draw up behind the front machine, it was declared, and Campbell, not seeing the woman emerging from behind the truck, started to pass the two machines.
At this point, Campbell said, he saw Mrs. Foulke and immediately applied his brakes, at the same time turning far to the north side of the road to avoid hitting Mrs. Foulke.
It Is said that the aged woman evidently became bewildered and started back across the road toward the north side, and stepped directly in front of the Campbell machine. She was knocked to the pavement and died a few moments later while being rushed to the Ramona hospital. Mr. and Mrs. Campbell were greatly upset whon they came to the county Jail to report the accident. Mrs. Campbell was nearly hysterical.
Mrs. Foulke was well known in Rialto and was a member of the Methodist church of that city. She was on the way to morning services when the accident occurred. She lived on a 20-acre ranch of her own west of Rialto.
The inquest will bo held at the Mark B. Shaw undertaking parlors this morning at 10 o'clock. Coroner Hanna investigated the accident, and stated that in his opinion tho death was accidental.
Tho funeral will be held Tuesday at 2:30 p. m. from the Methodist church of Rialto. The Rev. Maynard W. Beckwith will preach the funeral sermon.
