She was a member of National Church of God in Hurlock (East New Market), where she served in several capacities including choir member, youth director, deaconess, and trustee. She received her early Christian training at St. James Holiness Church in Snow Hill.
Prior to retiring, Mrs. Hughes was employed by Dorchester County Public Schools as a food service worker.
She will be lovingly remembered by: four sons, Randall (Francine) Hughes, Charles Hughes, Jr., Desmond (Sheree) Hughes, and Dr. Lorenzo L. Hughes; two daughters, Diane Hughes and Charlotte (John) Harris; two sisters, Mable Townsend and Elsie Truitt; two brothers-in-law, Daniel Hughes and Roy Hughes; four sisters-in-law, Peggy Macer, Edna Hughes, Frances Dennis, and Harriet Dennis; eight grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; several nephews, nieces, cousins, other relatives, and friends.
In addition to her parents and husband, she was also preceded in death by four brothers, Ralph Dennis, Sr., Vaughn Dennis, Sr., Orvin Dennis, Jr., and Calvin Dennis, and four sisters, Nancy Price, Nettie Gale, Frances Deshields, and Bertha Bishop.
Mrs. Hughes will lie in repose on Friday, May 1, 2020, from 12 to 3 PM at Lewis N. Watson Funeral Home, P.A., 1618 West Road, Salisbury and from 5 to 8 PM at National Church of God, 6231 Lords Crossing Road, Hurlock (East New Market). A drive-in funeral service will be held Saturday, May 2, 2020, at 1 PM in the parking lot of First Baptist Church, 528 Booth Street and Delaware Avenue, Salisbury. A drive-in viewing will be held one hour prior to the service. All family and guests must remain in their vehicles. Interment will follow the funeral service at Green Acres Memorial Park, Inc., West Road, Salisbury.
