John Ramey Nickel was born in Richland County, Ohio to James Nickel & Edith Mariah Ramey Nickel.
The family moved to Missouri before coming west along the Oregon Trail in 1852. The crossing was hard and he lost his father, an aunt, and a cousin to fever along the way. James Nickel was buried near Fort Laramie, Wyoming. John also became sick but survived. They made it to California by way of the Willamette Valley, Salem and Sailor's Diggings (Waldo) Oregon where his mother operated a boarding house and John worked with the pack trains.
It was on one of these trips into Crescent City, California that he saw and fell in love with Elk Valley where he would settle. He met and married Rachel "Ellen" Record in 1864 and they had three daughters, Rosa Lee, Laurien and Ida May.
He held various occupations, a ranchman, dairyman, and merchant and held public service offices such as Superintendent of Schools and County Supervisor.
He and and Ellen moved for a time to other counties in California while his daughters were going to college but came back to Crescent City, where he died in 1906 at the age of 69. He was buried in the Nickel plot at the Brother Jonathan Cemetery. His headstone can be seen at the memorial next to his mother's.
