She met her husband, Herris Maxwell while a student at Howard College (later Samford University). They subsequently attended the University of Alabama where she completed her BA in Education. She would later earn a Master's Degree from the University of South Carolina in 1982. In 1958 she moved to Bethlehem, PA where she and her husband raised their family of three. It was here that her faith and church involvement grew. She became an elder in the Presbyterian Church and after moving to Columbia, SC in 1975 she continued her church involvement at Forest Lake Presbyterian Church. Sara enjoyed teaching science at Dent Middle School until her retirement in 1995. She was honored as Dent Teacher of the Year in 1987 and County Conservation Teacher of the Year in 1990. She was a member of the SC Association of Naturalists and a docent at the SC State Museum. In retirement, she served as a Palmetto Health Hospice Volunteer for 18 years and played music with the Dulcimores. Two years ago, Sara moved to live with her family in NC.
She is survived by her two sons, Maret Maxwell (Bonnie) of Dallas, TX and Paul Maxwell (Ruth) of Houston, TX; her daughter, Susan Swan (Douglas) of Horse Shoe; four grandsons, Drew, Chris, Bryan and Craig; her brother, Kenneth Hollingshead (Elenore); and by her sister, Patsy Southern (Kermitt).
A Service of Witness to the Resurrection will be held at 4:00 p.m. on Saturday, April 28, 2018 at Forest Lake Presbyterian Church, Columbia, SC.
