He was raised in Maysville, North Carolina and attended the Jones County Public Schools. Samuel was a graduate of the Class of 1966 from Georgetown Senior High School in Jacksonville, North Carolina.

After graduating high school, "Tiny" enlisted in the US Army on October 9, 1970. While in the military, he was attached to Company D 1st BN 503rd Infantry 101st Airborne Division. He took pride in serving his country and was even prouder to be a Vietnam Veteran. He was awarded many medals, including the Purple Heart.
