John Matthew [correction - Massey] Burks, 78, a resident of Salinas for the past 20 years who made his home at 15 Hebbron avenue, died early thi morning in a local hospital following a short illness.
Burks was a retired carpenter. he was a native of Cullman county, Ala.
Survivors include his wife, Ada Burks, of the family home and six sons: Orval M Burks of Downey, Calif, Russell O Burks, Birdo Burks, Casey D Burks and Corbit R Burks, all of Salinas, and Willard E Burks of Pacific Grove. Four daughters also survive him: Mrs Evie Shedd of Cullman, Ala, Mrs Sophie Growing of Birmingham, Ala, Mrs Sadie Infelise of Pittsburg, Calif, and Mrs Verna Silveira of Salinas. Thirty grandchildren and 18 great-grandchildren also survive.
Other survivors include two brothers, Homer Burks of Clarksburg, Tenn, and Ossie Burks of Cullman, Ala, and two sisters, Mrs Minnie Lovelady of Cullman, Ala, and Mrs Lena Farr of Larkspur, Tenn.
Funeral services will be held Monday at 2 pm at the Muller mortuary. Interment will follow in the Garden of Memories.
