Merrimac - Nancy Perkins passed away peacefully on Tuesday, April 14 in her home of 63 years, surrounded by family and Facetime. She was 94. Nancy and her husband Walter, or "Wally," grew their family of five children on a parcel of 13 acres of woodland and farmland. After "retiring" from their teaching careers, they started a small herb business, using their educational talents to facilitate workshops at their farm. Nancy's flower arranging classes at various community colleges and garden clubs would quickly fill to capacity as word spread of her expertise. Nancy and Wally were very civic-minded and were founding members and volunteers for many organizations. In 1981, Nancy talked her husband into riding their bicycles across the United States, pre-cell phone and satellite mapping! They started in San Diego and returned, suntanned and fit, 56 days later to Merrimac Town Square, where they were received by a hometown reception of marching bands, fire trucks and a key to the town. Nancy's "can do" attitude was an inspiration to all who knew her. Last December, Nancy was honored as the "2019 Grand Marshall" of the Merrimac Santa Parade, a title she made history by holding for two years, after the 2018 parade was rained out.
The family will celebrate Nancy some time this summer at their farm, once travel restrictions have been lifted. In lieu of flowers, donations in Nancy's name are welcome to Sarah's Place, an adult daycare, 180 Water St., Haverhill 01830, www.sarahsplace.org.
