Son of Edward William Grebenstein and Victoria Gray.

George graduated from Dartmouth College, Class of 1907, with a BS in Business. During his college days, he was a well known and successful basketball star which led to his basketball coaching job at Harvard after graduating from Dartmouth.

On May 20, 1911, in Newton, Massachusetts, George married Miss Maie Blanche Straight, a single woman with a two-and-a-half year old daughter, Helen Adams, from a previous relationship. They had no children of their own, and George acted as young Helen's father, allowing her to use his last name. Sometime abt. 1922, the exact date and location unknown, George and Maie divorced, ending his parental relationship with Helen who was then a teenager.

On December 24, 1924, George and his fiancée, Miss Ethel A. Slocomb, filed their "Intention to Marry" in Newton, Massachusetts. A week later, on December 31, 1924, George and Ethel were married in Cambridge, Massachusetts. During their marriage, they had two children, Victoria and George, and remained together until Ethel's passing in 1978.
