John “Mike” Mattox, age 64, of Buna, TX passed away on October 25, 2019. He was born on June 18, 1955 in Kirbyville, TX to William Levi Mattox and Patsy Raye.

Full of life and genuine, “Mike” was a likeable guy with a gentle nature; he was laid back and slow to anger. A country boy at heart, he enjoyed camping trips and being on the river, ziplining and riding the open road on his motorcycle; his love for the outdoors eventually led him to his work with trees as an arborist, which became a lifelong passion. “Mike” could light up a room with laughter with his comedic ability, his story telling captured the focus of listeners and entertained family gatherings often. He had a natural gift when it came to building things and an eye for junk that could be turned into treasure. Known was “Paw-Paw Mike” to his grand babies, If he was surrounded by his family and dogs, he was a happy man; he was beloved by his family and they were his true treasure.

Left to honor his memory is his daughters, Beverley Perkins and husband, Travis Horn of Buna, TX, Kimberly Mattox and husband, Quentin Hockless Sr. of Vidor, TX, and Blake Mattox of Buna, TX; mother, Patsy Raye Barnes Mattox of Evadale, TX; brothers, Bill Mattox and wife, Judy of Evadale, TX, Walter Mattox and wife, Melissa of Silsbee, TX, and Shannon Mattox of Evadale, TX; sisters, Gayle Klingburg of Evadale, TX, Mary Anders and husband, Mike of Woodville, TX; grandchildren, Dalton Morgan, Mikki Perez, Paige Maddox, Shaun Maddox, Raelynn Perkins, Elaina Horn, and Jaxson Hockless.

He is preceded in death by the love of his life, Gwendolyn Mattox; daughter, Sherie Ard of Galveston, TX; and father, William Levi Mattox.
