Mrs. Susan Peirce Buried
-
Funeral Held from Home of Daughter, Mrs. Knott
-
The funeral of Mrs. Susan D. Peirce was held at 2 o’clock yesterday afternoon at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Van Buren Knott, 2323 Nebraska street. The body arrived Thursday night from Redlands, Cal., accompanied by Mrs. Knott and Mrs. Peirce’s two sons, Howard G. Peirce, of Sioux City, and Clifford C. Peirce, of St. Louis. Rev. C. E. Byram, pastor of the St. Thomas Episcopal church, conducted the services. The pallbearers were C. B. Chesterman, Woodbury Sanborn, Russell A. Marks, James H. Whittemore, W. C. Wells and R. C. A. Flournoy. Burial was in Graceland cemetery. Memorial services for Mrs. Peirce will be held in Redlands, Cal., her home for a number of years, Sunday morning by Rev. Ralph P. Smith, rector of Trinity church of Redlands and formerly of Sioux City. The following tribute from Rev. Mr. Smith appears in the Monday issue of a Redlands newspaper: “Mrs. Peirce was a splendid woman, of such strength and depth and gentleness of character that people loved her and gathered about her for the sweet ministry of her life and friendship wherever she might be. She was much loved in Redlands, where she has spent her last eleven winters, and so many will miss the genial, cheering, uplifting ministry of her whom they loved so to know as friend. The rector of Trinity parish was for ten years rector of her parish in Sioux City. He knew her inspiration, of her live interest and unfailing loyalty to her church there, to which she gave so many years of inspiring service until the weight of her years forbade her further hard work. I do not believe in all her life, and she knew trial and test, that she ever said an unkind word or had an unkind thought. No injustice or trial could wring from her aught but kindness. She died as she lived - gently and beautifully.”
