Earl Harmon, age 88, of North Branch went to be with his wife, Lodema and the Lord on Saturday, April 6, 2019. Earl was born on October 13, 1930 in North Branch Township. He was the son of Burley and Erma (North) Harmon. Earl married Lodema Mae Simmons on December 12, 1953 in North Branch.
Earl left home at the age of 9 to live and work for Henry Lamphier. At the age of 10 he lived and worked for Eva Young picking raspberries and taking care of chickens. At the age of 12 he lived and worked for Howard Haack on the potatoe farm. He stayed at the Haack farm until he entered the army in 1951. Earl proudly served in the U.S. Army. He was stationed at Fort Huachuca, AZ. He was discharged from the Army as a Staff Sergeant. He worked as a quality control inspector for General Motors for 30 years, retiring in 1984. Earl was a hard worker who often did carpentry work before his General Motors shifts. He also made butter for Michigan Milk and ran a grinder for a foundry in Imlay City. He was a member of St. James Lutheran Church; where he served as past-President, Elder and a Sunday School teacher. He was also a member of the North Branch American Legion Post 457. When Earl wasn’t working, he enjoyed hunting, fishing, working on puzzles, and playing Euchre. Most of all Earl loved spending time with his family and friends.
Earl is survived by his daughter, Nancy (Rick) Opperman of North Branch; his son, Earl (Carol) Harmon of South Carolina; 4 grandchildren and 4 great-grandchildren; brothers, Vernon (Dorothy) Harmon and Kenneth Harmon; and many nieces and nephews.
Earl was preceded in death by his parent; his wife, Lodema; his infant son, David; siblings, Ivaline, Melvin, Wilma, Bernard, Betty and Beverly.
The family has requested a private funeral service at St. James Lutheran Church. Pastor James Saatkamp will officiate. Earl will be laid to rest with his wife, Lodema in Greenwood Cemetery in North Branch Township. Military honors will be conducted by North Branch American Legion Post 457.
