He was the son of James Bell and Elizabeth Coon Hazen. He was married to Mary Arvilla Layman, called Arvilla, in the fall of 1866. They had six children. He was buried in Oak Grove cemetery in Sonora twp. His parents were born in Pennsylvania according to the census. He served in the 118th Ill Vol Inf in the Civil War and was a proud member of the GAR and was at the Battle of Vicksburg.
Note which may not be true: following marriage they lived for one year on Mary's fathers place in Montebello Twp. Then they leased 160 acres, southeast quarter of section 3. Six years later about 1873 they moved to Clark Co. Missouri, purchased a farm, stayed a year and returned to Hancock Co., in 1874.
