Joseph C. and Sharon Jeanine (Benedict) Hurst have been reunited together in Heaven for eternity. Sharon, age 84 of Satellite Beach, Florida and formerly of Elwood, passed away on Saturday, December 25, 2019 at her daughter’s home following an extended illness. She was born October 21, 1935 in Elwood, the daughter of Robert and Lola Benedict. Joe passed away on May 23, 2018 in Satellite Beach, Florida. He was born May 7, 1930 in Rushville, the son of Bernard and Florine (Sliger) Hurst. Sharon was a 1953 graduate of Wendell L. Willkie High School in Elwood. After Joe’s graduation, he served in the U.S. Air Force. Sharon and Joseph were married in 1960 and shared over 58 years of marriage together. Joe had a rewarding career in civil service for the U.S. government for many years. Sharon was a former member of St. Joseph Catholic Church in Elwood. She was an active member of the Pipe Creek Historical Society in Elwood, the Elwood Kiwanis Club, and the Elwood Alumni Association for many years. Joe was a life-long member of Masonic Lodge #91 in New Castle, Indiana. Sharon and Joe were both active in the Elwood Kiwanis Club where Joe formerly served as President and in RCIA at St. Michael’s Catholic Community in Bedford, Texas. Joe served as President of the Pee Wee Football program while living in Hurst, Texas. Sharon actively provided awareness and education for women regarding breast cancer through The Robin’s Rest. Sharon especially loved to knit and would pass many hours knitting before sharing her homemade works of love with family and friends. Joe and Sharon will be greatly missed by their family and many friends.

Joe and Sharon’s family includes 3 children, Robin Lynn (husband Mark) Hatfield of Satellite Beach, Florida, Robert (wife Mariya) Hurst of Euless, Texas, and John (wife Jennifer) Hurst of Columbia, Missouri; Sharon’s sisters, Sue Loser of Elwood, Mary Beth (husband Jim) Riddle of Cicero, Cindy (husband Steve) Odom of Franklin, and Jill (husband Kim) Cruzan of Noblesville; Joe’s sisters, Sarah Jane Hurst of Florida and Marjorie (husband Jerry) Cox of Florida; 11 grandchildren; 3 great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews. Sharon was preceded in death by her parents and Joe was preceded in death by his parents and a sister, Rosemary Hurst.

Due to current health restrictions, a private memorial service for Joe and Sharon will be held at the Elwood City Cemetery Mausoleum on Tuesday, April 28, 2020 with Father Dan Duff of St. Joseph Catholic Church officiating. Private entombment of Sharon and Joseph’s remains will take place following the service. A public memorial service will take place at a later date in 2020 when health restrictions are lifted. Arrangements have been entrusted to Copher-Fesler-May Funeral Home in Elwood.
