Governor of Maine. He graduated from the University of Maine in 1942 and served in the United States Navy in World War II. Following the war Reed established himself as a potato farmer and became active in several business ventures. A Republican, he served on Maine's Water Improvement Commission from 1953 to 1954. In 1954 he won a seat in the Maine House of Representatives, where he served from 1955 to 1957. In 1956 Reed was a successful candidate for the Maine Senate, where he served from 1957 to 1959. He was serving as Senate President when Governor Clinton Clauson died, so Reed succeeded to the governorship. He served the remainder of Clauson's term, and was elected to a full two-year term in 1960. He was reelected to Maine's first four year gubernatorial term in 1962. Reed's service as Governor spanned 1959 to 1967. After losing reelection in 1966 he was appointed to the National Transportation Safety Board. In 1976 Reed was appointed Ambassador to Sri Lanka and the Maldives, where he served until 1977. From 1981 to 1985 he again served as Ambassador to Sri Lanka and the Maldives.
